Now that we are in the midst of the December holiday season, it seems that people are offering gooey, tempting snacks, candies and desserts everywhere you turn. You might think that the team at A Dental Care is going to ask our patients in such areas as Greenspoint, Gulf Gate, Tidwell and Union to refrain from eating sticky junk food. While we do encourage healthy eating, we don’t think it’s necessary to avoid all treats during the holidays.

For those times when you do indulge, it’s good to have a plan for the sake of your dental health. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you cope with sweet, sticky treats:
- Choose wisely and pursue moderation. This means, for example, forgoing donuts in the morning because you know a holiday cake will be served during lunchtime or that you will be attending a party that night where you know sweets be offered in abundance!
- Brush your teeth in between meals. This is a task that you might avoid after lunch because it’s inconvenient when you are at work or school and away from the toothbrush by your bathroom sink. But it’s easy to pack a small travel toothbrush like you would bring on a vacation. Keep a toothbrush and some toothpaste in your desk, backpack, purse or briefcase and you’ll be set.
- Eat some fresh vegetables to help clean your teeth. Raw carrots, celery, broccoli and other healthy snacks will be a good chaser to the gooey treats you’ve just devoured.
- Chew sugarless gum. Chewing gum after a sticky treat will help generate more saliva, which helps wash away sticky treat residue and will neutralize acid from bacteria to reduce tooth decay.
