Pain In Teeth

ARE YOU IN PAIN?

NEED EXTRACTION. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

Whenever possible your Dentist in Houston will try to save a tooth. There are times, though, that the best course of action is to remove it, instead. An extraction is a procedure that sounds scary but is necessary when a tooth is damaged by trauma, disease or crowding according to the American Dental Association. What is a tooth extraction?

What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction means removing a tooth from its socket. This surgical procedure is necessary for many reasons including:

Too many teeth in the mouth causing crowding

Infection or decay that cannot be repaired

A broken tooth that presents a risk of infection

Periodontal disease advanced enough to loosen teeth

A standard procedure is wisdom teeth extraction, for instance.

There are two types of extractions:

Simple

Surgical

Porcelain Dental Veneers & Lumineers

A simple extraction involves removing a visible tooth with forceps. It’s a form of cheap tooth extraction in Houston and other areas. Surgical removal is more involved than the simple version, though.

What is a Surgical Extraction?

A surgical extraction typically involves removing gum or bone tissue to access a bad tooth. It starts with an x-ray to determine the position of the tooth to determine the best way to take it out. Once complete, the dentist will use stitches usually to close the wound and allow it to heal.

When Would a Patient Require a Surgical Extraction?

Different conditions require a dentist to take a surgical approach to tooth extraction. Wisdom teeth removal is a good example. Often the mouth is too crowded to allow wisdom teeth to properly erupt through the gum tissue, leading to what dentists call an impaction. Impacted teeth do not grow in fully, so cutting of the gum and bone is necessary. Teeth that break into pieces may require surgical extraction, as well.

Does Tooth Extraction Hurt?

In most cases, getting the extraction is less painful than living with a damaged or diseased tooth. The oral surgeon in Houston will do everything possible to ease discomfort and anxiety during the procedure, as well. There are several levels of sedation available to make the patient comfortable such as:

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or nitrous sedation

Oral sedation

SimpleIV sedation

During the procedure, anesthesia numbs the area and prevents you from feeling pain. Afterward, the dental staff will provide post-procedure instruction to help prevent complications like infection or bleeding.
